Julia Gutman
Julia Gutman (1993) is a multidisciplinary artist based on Gadigal Country. Her practice is anchored by an experimental textile process, with which she tells personal stories that draw on the language and history of western oil painting. Tender and vulnerable, Julia’s work invites viewers into her world, interrogating her own relationships and the performance of selfhood, using donated clothing and other found textiles as a vehicle for connection and collaboration. In May 2023, Julia was awarded the Archibald, Australia’s most prestigious painting prize, making her the youngest winner in 85 years. She was one of six exhibiting Artists in Primavera, Young Australian Artists at Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art in 2022. She holds an MFA in Sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design and a BFA in Painting from UNSW Art and Design, where she now teaches studio practice. Her work has been exhibited across Australia and internationally with shows in Sydney, Melbourne, Rome, Milan and New York.
