About the show

SECCI Gallery is proud to announce its support for the cultural programming at the Cathedral Baptistery in Pietrasanta, conceived by curator Enrico Mattei. For the 2024 summer season, from June 21 to September 8, Mattei has selected the artist Gio’ Pomodoro and his project Segni Elementari. This exhibition aims to create something deeply connected to its context, integrating or counterpointing the original narrative and its transformations over time. At this historical juncture, contemporary art offers a unique opportunity to communicate the essence of a place through forms that evoke it artistically, rather than liturgically.

Segni Elementari explores Pomodoro’s experiments and research, investigating formal solutions, structures, materials, and techniques, all enriched by a broad and deep cultural perspective. The works chosen— Figlia del Sole, Folla, e Tensione Verticale—showcase Pomodoro’s artistic depth in sculpture, inviting philological, historical, philosophical, and analytical-scientific reflection.

The exhibition will open on June 21, 2024, coinciding with the summer solstice. On this day in Versilia, the sun rises from the Apuan Alps and visually passes through the hole of Mount Forato. The goal is to capture this sunlight inside the Baptistery, marking the longest day of the year when the sun reaches its highest point on the horizon, synchronizing with the Forato phenomenon.

Figlia del Sole pays homage to the Madonna of the Sun, a revered painting from the late Gothic period, depicting the Virgin and Child between Saints John the Baptist and John the Apostle, created between 1366 and 1369, and housed in the cathedral. The exhibition will conclude on September 8, 2024, the Feast of the Nativity of Mary, when the sacred image will be unveiled to the public. The theme of the Sun, associated with motherhood, offers comfort, symbolizing light, clarity, and warmth in daily life.
